Letting the Landscape Be Seen / 風景をただ視る

この春からこどもと一緒に保育園に通っている。幸いなことに、登園前後には地域の中でも大きな公園を横切るのだが、敷地内をゆっくり歩く時間が、自分の生活リズムにおいてとても心地いいひとときになっている。

ベビーカーを押して歩くのは、一人で歩くよりも、ずっと不便だ。段差に気をつけるのはもちろん、道のささやかな勾配に車輪をもっていかれたり（多くの歩道が排水のため脇の方に傾斜していることに、今までよりずっと意識的になった）、前後を行き交う自転車にも目を配る必要がある。

不便、というネガティブな言葉を書いたのにはもちろん作為があって、実際にいまのところ自分はその不便さから受ける新たな気づきを楽しんでいる。もっとも大きな変化は、自分本来のペースでは歩けなくなる、という点だ。「ペース」とは、速度という意味でもあるが、ここではどちらかというと「意思」のことを指して話を進めたい。

保育園にこどもを送りながら公園を歩いていると、これまでは「大きな木々が揺れていて綺麗だな」程度の認識だった風景に対して、なんだかいろいろとディテールが気になってくる。まずはシンプルに「あの木はなんだろう」という素朴な疑問。近づいて、立ち止まって、葉の形状や樹皮の質感を観察してみたくなる。

普段一人で、あるいはだれかと歩いているときは、ポッドキャストを聴いていたり、会話をしていたり、案外頭の中では考え事をめぐらしているものだ。ゆえに風景をただ視て受け止める、というモードにはなりにくい。ベビーカーを押してゆっくり歩いていると、中に収まるこどものことが適度に気がかりとなり、フォーカスする対象が絞られる。結果、車輪を押すその先に広がる風景を、ただただ感受できるのかもしれない。

こどもとベビーカーを保育園に預けた後は、ささやかなボーナスタイムだ。ベビーカーを押していると近寄れなかったあぜ道を歩いて木や植物・花に近づき、気になっていた樹種の同定に取りかかる。といっても、自分は専門家ではないので、およそあたりをつけた樹種をスマートフォンで検索して照合していく程度のお遊びにすぎないのだが。それでもなお、それまで「風に揺らぐ大きな木」「緑道に添えられたビビッドな花弁」くらいにしか認識できていなかった対象を、少しだけ理解できたような気持ちになって、気分がいい（あくまで輪郭に触れる程度の理解だという但し書きは忘れずに）。

ベビーカーを押していた時にごく自然に湧いてきた「あの木はなんだろう」という気持ちは、都市で慌ただしく生活をしていると脇に追いやられてしまう類のものだから、それだけでどこか嬉しい。そして、その疑問をそのときすぐには解決できないところにこそ、真の喜びがある。こどもとベビーカーを保育園に預けて、自分のペースを取り戻した開放感とともに木々に近づき、数十分前の疑問を晴らす。この答え合わせのような営みが、なんとも楽しい。

10年以上前に、アメリカ西海岸の長いトレイルを半年かけてバックパッキング旅行したことがある。そのときも、およそ一週間ごとに山からヒッチハイクをして麓の町に降りるまで、人と会話をしたり、はたまたインターネットで調べ物をすることはできなかった。一週間の間、ただただ歩き、キャンプをしながら出会った風景のことを反芻する時間をもてたことが、降り立った町で獲得できる情報をずっと色濃くしてくれたことを思い出した。

「すぐに知ることができない」という情報に対する距離や時差に対して抱く、この好ましい感覚は、自分が写真を撮って、後日イメージを暗室で現像する悦びにも通じるものがあるのかもしれない。

季節は初夏で、木々の緑は深まるばかり。これから一年、あらたな発見が静かに、次々と訪れることを想像すると、それだけで嬉しい。

Since this spring, I have been taking my child to the nursery. Fortunately, we pass through one of the largest parks in the neighborhood, and the time I spend slowly walking through the grounds before and after drop-off has become a deeply pleasant part of my daily rhythm.

Walking while pushing a stroller is far more inconvenient than walking alone. In addition to watching out for steps, the wheels are easily pulled by subtle slopes in the pavement (I have become much more aware that many sidewalks tilt slightly to one side for drainage), and I have to pay attention to bicycles passing in both directions.

I use the word “inconvenient” quite deliberately. In truth, I find myself enjoying the new awareness that arises from this inconvenience. The most significant change is that I can no longer walk at my own natural pace. By “pace,” I do not only mean speed, but rather something closer to “will” or “intention.”

As I walk through the park on the way to the nursery, I begin to notice details in the scenery that I previously would have registered only vaguely as, “The tall trees are swaying beautifully.” A simple curiosity arises: what kind of tree is that? I feel inclined to step closer, to stop, to observe the shape of the leaves and the texture of the bark.

When I walk alone or with someone else, I am often listening to a podcast, having a conversation, or preoccupied with thoughts in my head. It is surprisingly difficult to enter a mode in which I simply look at and receive the landscape. But when I walk slowly while pushing a stroller, my awareness of my child inside it becomes a gentle, constant concern, narrowing the range of things I need to focus on. As a result, perhaps I am able to simply perceive the scenery that unfolds in front of the wheels.

After leaving my child and the stroller at the nursery, a small bonus time begins for me. I walk along narrow paths I could not approach with the stroller and move closer to trees and plants, trying to identify the species that caught my attention earlier. I am no expert, so this amounts to little more than guessing the type of tree and checking it on my smartphone. Even so, I feel a quiet pleasure in gaining a slight understanding of things that I had previously perceived only as “large trees swaying in the wind” or “vivid petals lining the path” (while reminding myself not to mistake this for anything more than a superficial understanding).

The natural question that arose while pushing the stroller―what kind of tree is that?―is a feeling that easily gets pushed aside in the rush of urban life. And there is a certain joy precisely in not being able to answer that question immediately. After leaving my child at the nursery and regaining my own pace, I return to the trees with a sense of release and resolve the question that had lingered from half an hour earlier. This small act of “checking the answer” is unexpectedly delightful.

More than ten years ago, I spent six months backpacking along a long trail on the west coast of the United States. During that time, until I hitchhiked down from the mountains to a town, roughly once a week, I had no opportunity to speak with people or to look things up on the internet. I was simply walking and camping, spending long stretches of time reflecting on the landscapes I had encountered. I remember how this delay made the information I later obtained in town feel much more vivid and meaningful.

This sense of distance or time lag in relation to information―of not being able to know something immediately―may be connected to the pleasure I feel when taking photographs and developing the images later in the darkroom.

The season is early summer, and the greenery of the trees only grows deeper. Thinking about the quiet succession of new discoveries that will visit me over the coming year is, in itself, a source of joy.
