釜山空港から西へ、高速バスで約2時間。Subin Baeのスタジオは、韓国南部の小さな地方都市にある。彼女が生まれ育った故郷でもある。以前はソウルにスタジオを構えていたが、より深く制作と向き合うため、この街へ戻り、新たな拠点を設けた。

街の周辺には緑が多く、中心部には市場や昔ながらの街並みが今も残っている。一方、郊外へ出ると巨大な高層マンション群がいくつも現れる。古くからある風景のすぐ近くで、街が大きく変わろうとしている。

スタジオはビルの一室にある。大きな窓の左手には高層マンションが立ち並ぶが、それ以外の視界に広がるのは緑と大きな空だ。室内は制作の工程に合わせて機能的に仕切られ、木工、焼成、レジン、研磨、それぞれの作業場所が設けられている。私たちが訪れた日には、制作途中の「Wood Welding」が各所に置かれていた。完成へ向かう作品を順番に見ているようで、その配置からも制作の過程を知ることができた。

「Wood Welding」シリーズは、一見するとシンプルな立方体に見える。しかし、完成までには想像以上の工程と時間を要する。

まず木製パネルを組み上げ、立方体の構造をつくる。その表面をポプラ合板で覆い、接合部にトーチの炎を当てる。そこで生まれる焼き跡は、金属を溶接した際に現れる溶接ビードのようにも見える。

炎をエッジに沿って動かす。一見すると単純な作業だが、実際はとても繊細だ。炎を当てる角度、速度、時間。さらに木目の向きや密度によっても焼き跡は大きく変わる。作品ごとに細かな条件を変えながら制作するため、同じ焼き跡、同じ表情を持つものは二つとして存在しない。

焼成を終えると、作家自身が調合したレジンを真空チャンバーに入れ、内部の気泡を取り除く。そのレジンを表面へ均一に流し込む。木材や焼き跡を覆い隠すというより、それぞれを一つの物質としてつないでいくような工程だ。透明度と強度をあわせ持つレジンは、「Wood Welding」に欠かすことのできない素材となっている。

そして研磨が始まる。サンダーとポリッシャーを使い分け、納得できる表面になるまで何度も磨く。終わりが見えないほど根気のいる作業だという。しかし、この長い時間を経ることで、焼き跡は単なる炭ではない深いテクスチャーへと変わり、木の表面には次第に陶器のような静かな艶が現れてくる。目の前にあるものが本当に木なのか、一瞬わからなくなる。その質感は、この途方もない研磨の積み重ねから生まれている。

これらの工程はすべて、Subin Bae自身のスタジオで、一点ずつ手作業で行われている。もちろん、時間を費やすこと自体が目的ではない。焼成、レジンの調合、研磨。そのどれにも妥協せず手を入れていくことで、「Wood Welding」は彫刻のような存在感を持ちながら、日常の中で使うことのできる強度を備えていく。

作品が生まれる過程を見て、その土地を歩き、スタジオの窓から彼女が日々見ている風景を眺めたことで、「Wood Welding」という作品を少し理解できたような気がした。

整然と並ぶ高層の建物。その傍らには緑があり、その上には大きな空が広がっている。彼女が生まれ育ち、再び制作の場所として選んだこの地方都市を見ていると、立方体の作品はビルやマンションのようにも見えてくる。そして焼き跡がつくる不均一な輪郭には、人工と自然、秩序と自由が隣り合う、この街や都市の姿が重なった。

もしかするとこの作品は、彼女が長い時間をかけて見てきた風景の、無意識の断片なのかもしれない。

そこで本展では、それぞれの作品を独立した「点」として置くのではなく、反復し、組み合わされ、互いに距離を持つことで、「街や都市」のような展示をつくります。鑑賞者がその間を歩き、作品との距離や見る角度を変えることで、作品同士の関係も変わり、目の前の風景も少しずつ姿を変えていく。作品と空間、そしてそこを歩く人。その関係の中から、展示そのものが一つの風景として立ち現れていきます。

Subin Bae (b. 2002)
Subin Baeは、韓国を拠点に活動する作家。2024年に桂園芸術大学を卒業。すべての作品を自身のスタジオで一点一点制作するセルフメイドの姿勢を貫きながら、素材の可能性を探求し、コレクタブルデザインとアートの領域を横断する作品を発表している。2024年にはアメリカ・サンフランシスコのSVRN、2025年には韓国・釜山のBAMA、2026年にはデンマークの3 days of designにて「Wood Welding Series」を発表するなど、国内外で活動の場を広げている。

From Busan Airport, it is about a two-hour journey west by express bus. Subin Bae’s studio is located in a small provincial city in southern Korea. It is also the place where she was born and raised. She previously had a studio in Seoul, but returned to her hometown and established a new base here in order to engage more deeply with her work.

The city is surrounded by greenery, while its center still retains traditional markets and older streetscapes. Yet on the outskirts, enormous clusters of high-rise apartment buildings appear one after another. Old landscapes remain, while the city around them continues to change.

Her studio occupies a room in a building. From the large window, high-rise apartments stand to the left, but almost everything else in view is green, with a vast sky stretching above it. The interior is divided according to the different stages of her process, with separate areas for woodworking, burning, resin, and polishing. When we visited, unfinished works from the *Wood Welding* series were placed throughout the studio. Moving through the space felt almost like following the works through the stages of their making.

At first glance, the *Wood Welding* series appears to consist of simple cubic forms. Yet each piece requires far more time and many more processes than its appearance might suggest.

The process begins by assembling wooden panels into a cubic structure. The surface is then covered with poplar plywood, and a torch flame is applied along the joints. The resulting burn marks resemble the beads formed when metal is welded.

Moving a flame along an edge may sound like a simple act, but in practice it is extremely delicate. The angle of the flame, its speed, the length of exposure, as well as the direction and density of the wood grain, can dramatically alter the result. The conditions are adjusted for each work, which means that no two pieces carry exactly the same burns or the same expression.

After burning, Bae mixes the resin herself and places it in a vacuum chamber to remove the air trapped within. The resin is then poured evenly across the surface. Rather than concealing the wood and its traces of fire, it seems to bind them together into a single material. With both transparency and strength, the resin has become an essential element of *Wood Welding*.

Then the polishing begins. Using both sanders and polishers, Bae continues until the surface reaches the finish she is looking for. It is an extraordinarily patient process, with no obvious end point. Yet through this extended period of polishing, the burned areas become something beyond the simple idea of charred wood, developing a deep texture, while the surface gradually takes on a quiet sheen reminiscent of ceramic. For a moment, it can be difficult to believe that what you are looking at is actually wood. That quality is born from this seemingly endless accumulation of polishing.

Every stage takes place in Subin Bae’s own studio, with each work made individually by hand. Of course, spending an enormous amount of time is not the purpose in itself. Burning, mixing the resin, polishing—she gives equal attention to every stage. Through this process, *Wood Welding* acquires the presence of sculpture while retaining the strength required of an object that can exist within everyday life.

Seeing how the works are made, walking through the city, and looking out from the studio window at the landscape Bae sees every day made us feel that we understood *Wood Welding* a little better.

Orderly rows of high-rise buildings. Beside them, expanses of green, and above, an enormous sky. Looking at this provincial city where she grew up and later chose to return to as a place to work, we began to see the cubic forms as buildings and apartment blocks. The irregular outlines created by fire also seem to echo something of the city itself—a place where the man-made and the natural, order and freedom, exist side by side.

Perhaps these works are, in some unconscious way, fragments of a landscape she has been looking at throughout her life.

For this exhibition, rather than presenting each work as an isolated point, we will place them in relation to one another, forming a kind of “city.”

As visitors walk between them, changing their distance from the works and the angle from which they are seen, the relationships between the objects also begin to shift. The landscape in front of us changes with them. The works do not exist entirely on their own. There is the space, and there are the people moving through it. From these relationships, the exhibition itself gradually emerges as a landscape.

Subin Bae is a Korea-based artist. She graduated from Kaywon University of Art & Design in 2024. Committed to a self-made practice, she creates each work individually in her own studio, exploring the possibilities of materials while developing works that move between the fields of collectible design and art. Her work has been presented internationally, including the Wood Welding Series at SVRN in San Francisco in 2024, BAMA in Busan in 2025, and 3 days of design in Denmark in 2026.
