Fragments from a Blank Map / 役に立たない記憶の断片

自分より10ほど歳が若い、才能に満ちた友人が5月の大型連休に中央アジア各国を旅する予定だという。互いの自宅近くのカフェで仕事の近況などをひとしきり話した後、そういえば、という具合で切り出された。というのも、自分も彼と同じ時期に、その地域を旅したことがあったからだ。

  ——写真を撮っていなかった頃の旅は、能動的にイメージを定着させていないからか、どちらかといえば映像的なフローとして身体に堆積しているような気がする。  

ウズベキスタン、カザフスタン、そしてキルギス。歴史的には旧ソ連の一部だったそれらの地域の何に惹かれて旅をしたのかと問われれば「てんで知らないことばかりだったから」と返すほかない。流通している通貨の名前も、言語も、著名な観光地も、名産品も知らなかった。だからこそ、誰かのおすすめをなかば義務感でまわるでもなく、絶景として知られる風景をスタンプラリーのようにハントするでもない旅ができるのではないかと思ったのだ。当時の国際情勢はいまよりは随分と穏やかで、円も極端に安くはなかった。元号はまだ平成で、アルマトイの無名戦士を讃える公園近くに投宿した小さくも清潔なビジネスホテルで令和を迎えた。自分は独身で、カメラを携えることもまだ覚えておらず、立場的にも物理的にも、随分と身軽だった。  

さて、友人からその地域を旅したときのことを尋ねられて、応答できたことといえば、驚くほど有用性に欠ける内容だった。おすすめのレストランやホテルの情報は特にない。Google Mapsを開いても、ピンは一つも打たれていない。それでも、地図を拡大して都市や道路のエキゾチックな名前を辿っていけば、いくつかの断片的な記憶が蘇ってくる。たとえば、プロフと呼ばれる炊き込みご飯が美味しかったこと。ロシアの自動車メーカー・ラーダ社の古い車がたくさん走っていたこと（その前に旅したモスクワでは、あまりお目にかかれなかったというのに）。特にキルギスの天山山脈地域の陸路移動では、うんざりするほど同じ光景が延々続いたこと。国境間の移動を含めた長いバス移動の前に、カチカチのパンを購入して、2リットルボトルのミネラルウォーターとともに口に放り込んで空腹を誤魔化したこと（昼食を摂れる場所にいつ停まれるのかわからなかった）。道中に横切るガソリンスタンドのサインが、目にしたことのない社名とグラフィックばかりで面白かったこと。  

彼の役に立てたのかはまるで自信がないが、こうしてあらためて書き起こしてみると、それなりにフィジカルの伴った、手触りのある感想のようにも思えてくる。なんだか、現在抱えている腰痛が当時の長距離バス移動の身体メモリーのように思えて、愛おしい。いや、それは美化しすぎか。  

クリエイティブの世界で引く手あまたの若い友人に、なぜ忙しい合間を縫ってまで中央アジアを旅しようと思うのかと聞けば、前年にヨーロッパの都市を訪ねたときに感じた、東京で過ごすのと同じような時間の経過のあり方がきっかけのようだった。自分が旅に求めてきたものを彼もまた望んでいることを知り、親近感が湧いてくる。  

都市に行けば新たな縁も生まれるし、固有名詞つきの情報に触れることで時代感覚をアップデートできたような気になる。実際そういう側面はあるだろう。だが個人的には、プライベートな旅ではなるべくまっさらな白地図を無名の一個人として自由に移動するだけの日々にベットできたらといつも思っている。朝起きて、ホテルのロビーに立てかけてある蛇腹折りの地図を広げ、視界に入った気になる場所へ気ままに歩いていく。そんな旅こそ、アルゴリズムやフィルターバブルから遠く離れて、ニュートラルでいられるもっとも贅沢なひとときだと言えやしないか。  

あらかじめセレクトされた「素敵とされているもの」や文脈が整理されている「ありがたいとされているもの」よりも、なんだかよくわからない環境に身を浸すことで得られる、意図しなかった出会いに驚きたい。

たとえばサマルカンドのスーパーで買い物をした際にもらったビニール袋、ビシュケクのセカンドハンドストアで見つけた草サッカーチームのユニフォーム、アルマトイの文具店で購入した白封筒。どれも誰がいつデザインしたものかわからないし、そうしたものを持ち帰ろうと事前に息巻いていたわけでもない。それらは自分がただ偶然に出会い、独断と偏見で持ち帰ったものだ。

あるいは、チョルポン＝アタで昼食を摂ろうと地元の人に教えてもらった店が、カウリスマキの映画に出てくるようなカラオケパブで、どうしたわけか店内にはインドのラーガのような音楽が流れていたこと。いま思い返しても、あの場所がどういう店だったのか、うまく説明できない。

ここ数年の技術の進化や環境の変化から、自由な物差しでなにかと対峙することが難しくなっていく感覚があるけれども、中央アジアを旅する、という選択は安易で、それでも有効なアイデアだと思う。  

友人にはあまりにも具体的な情報を伝えることができなかったので、当時の自分が携えていた本の一つとして武田百合子の『犬が星見た』（中公文庫）という随筆を勧めた。50年前の彼の地を旅団の一員として回った著者の、みずみずしく素直なエッセイには今日旅する上で直接の役に立つ「情報」はほぼ載っていない。でもゆえに、来たる旅に十分な余白を与え、想像力を喚起してくれるだろう。

彼にとって予定している旅がインスピレーションに満ちた日々になることを。そしてなにより、誰もが安全に各々の白地図を移動できる世界がこれからも持続することを切に願っている。

A friend of mine, about ten years younger and brimming with talent, told me he was planning to travel across several countries in Central Asia during the long holidays in May. The topic came up after we had spent some time catching up on work at a café near our homes, when the conversation drifted into something more private. I had, after all, traveled through the same region around the same time of year.

—Travel from the days before I began taking photographs, perhaps because I was not actively fixing images in place, seems to have settled in my body more as a kind of cinematic flow.

Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan. If asked what drew me to regions historically incorporated into the former Soviet Union, the only honest answer would be: I knew almost nothing about them. I did not know the names of their currencies, their languages, their famous sights, or their specialties. Precisely because of that, I thought I might be able to travel without dutifully following someone else’s recommendations, without hunting down postcard views like items on a checklist. The international situation then was far calmer than it is now, and the yen had not yet weakened so dramatically. It was still the Heisei era in Japan, and I welcomed the Reiwa era in a small but clean business hotel near a park in Almaty dedicated to unknown soldiers. I was single, had not yet even learned to carry a camera with me, and was light in every sense—socially and physically.

When my friend asked what I remembered of that journey, what I could offer in response was strikingly lacking in usefulness. I had no particular recommendations for restaurants or hotels. Even when I open Google Maps, there is not a single pin left behind. And yet, when I zoom in on the map and trace the exotic names of cities and roads, fragments of memory begin to surface. For example, how delicious the rice dish called plov was. How many old cars made by the Russian manufacturer Lada I saw on the streets—though I had barely noticed any when I had visited Moscow earlier. How, in the Tien Shan region of Kyrgyzstan, the scenery during overland travel continued so endlessly that it became almost tedious. How, before a long bus ride that included crossing borders, I bought rock-hard bread and forced it down with two liters of mineral water to stave off hunger, unsure when we might next stop for a proper meal. How the signs of gas stations we passed along the way were fascinating simply because I had never seen those company names or graphics before.

I have little confidence that any of this was of help to him. Yet writing it out like this, it begins to feel like a set of impressions with a certain physical texture. Somehow, even the lower back pain I carry now feels dear to me, as if it were a kind of bodily memory sedimented from those long bus rides. Perhaps that is romanticizing it too much.

When I asked this young friend—much in demand in the creative world—why he wanted to make time for Central Asia despite his busy schedule, he said it stemmed from a feeling he had when visiting cities in Europe the year before: that time there seemed to pass in much the same way as it does in Tokyo. Realizing that he was seeking in travel what I, too, had long sought made me feel an immediate sense of affinity.

Cities offer new connections, and encountering information tied to proper nouns can make one feel as though one’s sense of the times has been updated. There is certainly truth in that. But personally, on private journeys, I always hope to bet instead on days spent moving freely across a blank map as an anonymous individual. I wake up, unfold the accordion map propped up in the hotel lobby, and wander toward whatever place happens to catch my eye. Such travel, far removed from algorithms and filter bubbles, feels like the most luxurious way to remain neutral.

Rather than encountering things preselected as “nice” or presented with neatly organized contexts as “valuable,” I want to be surprised by unintended encounters that come from immersing myself in environments I do not fully understand. For example, a plastic bag I received at a supermarket in Samarkand, a local amateur soccer team’s uniform I found at a secondhand shop in Bishkek, a plain white envelope I bought at a stationery store in Almaty. I have no idea who designed them or when, and I had never set out with the intention of bringing such things home. They were simply items I happened upon and chose, based on nothing more than personal whim.

Or the time in Cholpon-Ata when, following a local’s suggestion for lunch, I stepped into what turned out to be a karaoke bar that looked as though it belonged in an Aki Kaurismäki film, where, for some reason, music resembling Indian rāga played inside. Even now, I cannot quite explain what sort of place it really was.

In recent years, with technological advances and changes in our environment, I sometimes feel it has become harder to confront things using one’s own, unmediated scale of judgment. In that sense, choosing to travel to Central Asia is a simple idea, yet still an effective one.

Since I could offer my friend so little in the way of practical information, I recommended just one book: Inu ga Hoshi Mita by Yuriko Takeda. This fresh and candid essay, written by an author who traveled through the region as part of a delegation some fifty years ago, contains almost no “information” that would be directly useful today. Precisely for that reason, however, it leaves ample space for the imagination and provides generous room for the journey to come.

I hope his upcoming travels will be filled with inspiration. And above all, I sincerely hope for a world in which everyone can continue to move safely across their own blank maps.
