「デザイナーが関わっているとは誰も思わない様な製品をデザインできたなら、僕は良い仕事をしたと言える。」そう語るのはVitra、MAGIS、ALESSI、Flos、日本ではマルニ木工、無印良品と世界中の名だたる企業から家具、家電、食器、時計、メガネからバス停、電車と幅広いデザインに携わり、多くの製品を発表しているジャスパー・モリソン。デザイン好きな人なら誰もが知っているデザイナーですが、デザインに興味のない人でも彼のデザインしたものには馴染みがあるかもしれません。

イギリス・ロンドン出身のジャスパーモリソンはロイヤル・カレッジ・オブ・アートで家具デザインを学んだ後にロンドンで活動を開始します。彼が活動を始めた80年代後半は、エットレ・ソットサスを始めとするメンフィスなどポストモダンデザインが一世を風靡していました。その頃のデザインに対して、使い手を飛ばして美術館のために作られているようなデザインだと感じてたジャスパーは、もっと普通の雰囲気や普通の物に立ち返ろうと、すでにあるものの再考や当たり前の身近なものからインスピレーションを得た製品をデザインします。彼のデザインはたちまち注目を集め、ジャスパーはよりシンプルで使い心地の良いものをデザインするようになります。

彼のデザインはそのシンプルさからミニマルデザインと称されることも多々ありますが、ジャスパー本人はミニマルデザインという意識はありません。ミニマルデザインと言われるものは直線、丸、正方形、三角など記号的で徹底的に削ぎ落とした形態ですが、彼の描くラインは、人が好ましく感じる、愛らしさを感じる、そんな柔らかさを持っています。それは歴史の中で進化し、生活に馴染んできたもの、普通のワインボトルやドアノブが持つ線であり、ジャスパーはそれらを新しいデザインとして蘇らせます。

より普通なものをデザインする取り組みのスタートとなったALESSIのカトラリーは、あまりにも普通のカトラリーなのでジャスパー本人でさえ、誰も買ってくれないのではと不安に思ったそう。そんな心配をよそにこのカトラリーは成功を収めます。そんな時にジャスパーは彼と同じように”普通の”デザインをするデザイナー深澤直人と出会い、二人の会話の中に出てきたSuper Normalという言葉に「それだ。それが自分の目指してきたデザインを表す言葉だ。」と思ったと言います。深澤直人とSuper Normalとは何かを議論するうちに出てきたアイディアが、2006年の展示Super Normal展となります。有名デザイナーのオブジェクトの横に無名のオブジェクトが並ぶ展示は、活動初期からの「デザインはatmosphere（雰囲気）を作ることである。」という思いを見ることができます。ジャスパー・モリソンの目指すSuper Normalなデザインは、手馴染みも良くすっと生活に溶け込み素敵な雰囲気を作り出す、そんなデザインなのです。

" If I designed a product that no one would ever think a designer was involved, then I have done a good job." This is Jasper Morrison, who has designed furniture, home appliances, tableware, clocks, glasses, bus stops, trains, and many other products for famous companies around the world, including Vitra, MAGIS, ALESSI, Flos, and in Japan, Maruni Mokko and MUJI. He is a designer known to all design enthusiasts, but even those who are not interested in design may be familiar with the things he has designed.

Jasper Morrison, a native of London, England, began his career in London after studying furniture design at the Royal College of Art. In the late 80's when he started his career, postmodern design such as Memphis, including Ettore Sottsass, was taking the world by storm. Jasper felt that the designs of the time skipped over the user and were made for museums. He decided to return to a more ordinary atmosphere and ordinary objects, rethinking what already existed and designing products inspired by commonplace, familiar objects. His designs quickly gained attention, and Jasper began to design simpler, more comfortable products.

His designs are often called minimal design because of their simplicity, but Jasper himself is not conscious of minimal design. What is called minimal design is symbolic and thoroughly stripped-down forms such as straight lines, circles, squares, and triangles, but the lines he draws have a softness that makes people feel likeable and lovable. It is the lines that have evolved through history and become familiar in our daily lives, the lines that ordinary wine bottles and doorknobs have, and Jasper revives them as new designs.

ALESSI cutlery was the start of an effort to design something more ordinary, so ordinary that even Jasper himself was worried that no one would buy it. Despite these fears, the cutlery proved to be a success. At that time, Jasper met Naoto Fukasawa, a designer who also designs "normal" cutlery, and when the term "Super Normal" came up in their conversation, Jasper thought, "That's what I've been trying to achieve in my design." The idea that came out of the discussion with Naoto Fukasawa about what Super Normal means became the Super Normal exhibition in 2006. The exhibition, in which unknown objects are placed next to famous designers' objects, shows the idea that "design is about creating an atmosphere" from the very beginning of his career. This is the idea that Jasper Morrison's design aims to create an atmosphere. Jasper Morrison's Super Normal design is a design that fits in well with our daily life and creates a wonderful atmosphere.
