スタジオ Destroyers/Builders の作品は、建築、空間、ひいては他者とオブジェクトが対話する可能性についての、終わりのない実験の過程である。建築の要素、技術、素材などからインスピレーションを受け、それらの断片を家具のスケールに落とし込む。その過程において「触覚」は重要な手がかりになる。作品のほとんどは職人による手作業で作られ、人の手の介入とそれらが残す痕跡は、私たちの触覚を刺激することになる。結果、作品達は強い個性を放つが、決して周囲から切り離された存在ではない。当然、小さな建築であるそれらの作品が置かれるのもまた建築物の中であり、作品にちりばめられた要素と空間が対話をはじめ、新たな文脈が立ち現れる。そして触覚という身体感覚を手がかりにして、私たちの興味は現代性と伝統、アートとデザイン、自然と人工物の間で行われる知的なゲームに向かって惹きつけられてゆく。

スタジオの創設者Linde Freya Tangelder(リンデ・フレヤ・タンゲルダー)はブラジル系オランダ人のバックグラウンドを持つ。オランダのDesign Academy Eindhovenで学び、2014年の卒業と同時にベルギーに移りDestroyers/Buildersを設立。スタジオを立ち上げる一方でブリュッセルのManiera Galleryで経験を積む。ギャラリーでの経験によってデザインとアートの間に共通項があり、両者の間に魅力的な交流があることを確信する。それゆえ、デザイナーとして活動をしているが、アプローチはとてもアーティスト的とも言える。Valerie Objectとの継続的なコラボレーションの他は小規模な限定生産であり、作品の多くがコレクターズデザインの領域となっている。

2019年にはマイアミのAybar Galleryで作品が紹介され、Biennale Interieurベルギーの「デザイナー・オブ・ザ・イヤー」に選出。同時にミラノのNilufar Galleryの新しい現代部門の最初の展覧会である「FAR」に選ばれミラノサローネで展示される。また自身のスタジオでの活動と並行して、ベルギーの若い世代を代表するデザイナー集団Brutを共同設立、国内外でテーマ別のコレクションや展覧会を企画している。

2021年にはミラノサローネのDiorの展示に参加。各国17組のデザイナー、アーティストが招聘され、各々の視点からDiorを象徴するアイコンの一つである「メダリオンチェア」を再解釈した。2022はCassinaが支援するアーティストレジデンスプロジェクトに参加するなど精力的に制作を行っている。

Destroyers/Builders Exhibition

The work of Destroyers/Builders is a process of endless experimentation with architecture, space, and ultimately the possibility of objects interacting with others. Inspired by architectural elements, techniques, and materials, these fragments are then put into the scale of furniture. In the process, the sense of touch becomes an important clue. Most of the pieces are made by hand by craftsmen. The intervention of human hands in the manufacturing process and the traces they leave behind stimulate our sense of touch. In this way, the works have a strong individuality, but they are by no means isolated from their surroundings. Naturally, the small architectural works are also placed in buildings, where a new context emerges as the space begins a dialogue with the elements scattered throughout the works. And through the physical sensation of touch, our interest is drawn toward the intellectual games played between modernity and tradition, art and design, nature and artifice.

Studio founder Linde Freya Tangelder has a Brazilian-Dutch background. She studied at the Design Academy Eindhoven in the Netherlands and upon graduation in 2014 moved to Belgium to found Destroyers/Builders. While setting up her studio, she gained experience at the Maniera Gallery in Brussels. Her experience at the gallery convinced her that design and art have something in common and that there is a fascinating exchange between the two. Although her works as a designer, her approach can be described as very artistic: apart from her ongoing collaboration with Valerie object, her work is almost exclusively in small, limited editions.

In 2019, her work was presented at the Aybar Gallery in Miami and she was named "Designer of the Year" at the Biennale Interieur Belgium. At the same time, she was selected for "FAR", the first exhibition of the new contemporary section of the Nilufar gallery in Milan, to be shown at the Salone del Mobile in Milan. In 2021, she will participate in the Dior exhibition at the Salone del Mobile in Milan. Seventeen designers and artists from different countries were invited to reinterpret the "Medallion Chair," one of Dior's most iconic pieces, from their own perspectives. This year, she has been working energetically, including participation in an artist residency project supported by Cassina.
