この度デザインギャラリーLICHTでは、ライター/デザインジャーナリストの土田貴宏がキュレーションする「to be or not」展を開催。その活動を通して多様なデザインを考察してきた土田が、彼の自宅のために選んだものを軸とし て展示を構成します。

人は日常的に「もの」を購入します。そこには必ず何らかの動機がありますが、それを論理的に説明するのはきわめ て困難です。特に家具のように身近で長く使用するものは、機能、実用性、外観、価格などを細かく検討することに なる一方で、あくまで直感(直観)が重視される面もあります。「to be or not」展で展示されるのは、キュレーター 役を務める土田が実際に「買う」と判断してきたものと、「(とても欲しいけれど今のところは)買わない」と判断 したものの2種類。その判断の境目と、個々のデザインとの関係性が、本展のテーマになっています。

なお展示品のうち現行品を中心として、会期中販売及び受注を行います。

土田貴宏 ライター/デザインジャーナリスト。会社員などを経て、2001年からフリーランスで活動。国内外での取材やリサー チを通して雑誌をはじめ各種媒体に寄稿。家具などのプロダクトを中心に、コンテンポラリーデザインとその周辺の カルチャーについて書くことが多い。

土田が展覧会ディレクターを務めた21_21 DESIGN SIGHT企画展「The Original」(東京・六本木)が6月25日まで開催中です。

「to be or not」Exhibition curated by Takahiro Tsuchida

Design Gallery LICHT is pleased to present the exhibition "to be or not" curated by writer/design journalist Takahiro Tsuchida. Tsuchida, who has examined diverse designs through his activities, will organize the exhibition around the objects he has selected for his home.

People purchase "things" on a daily basis. There is always some kind of motive, but it is extremely difficult to explain it logically. Especially for familiar and long-lasting items such as furniture, functionality, practicality, appearance, price, etc. are all considered in detail, while intuition (gut feeling) is also important. In the "to be or not" exhibition, Tsuchida, as curator, will display two types of items: those that he has actually decided to "buy" and those that he has decided not to buy (for now, although he would like to buy them very much). The relationship between the borderline of these judgments and the individual designs is the theme of this exhibition.

Current products among the exhibited items will be on sale and available for order during the exhibition period.

Takahiro Tsuchida is a writer and design journalist. After working as a company employee, he began freelancing in 2001. He has contributed to various media including magazines through interviews and research in Japan and abroad. He often writes about contemporary design and its surrounding culture, focusing on products such as furniture.

June 3, 2023 (Sat) 18:00-20:00 Talk event starts at 19:00 with design journalist Takahiro Tsuchida and Kojiro Nagumo from BEAMS Director's Bank. Please note that there may be standing room only or a limited number of people depending on the situation on the day. Please understand that the number of people may be limited.

The 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT exhibition "The Original" (Roppongi, Tokyo), for which Tsuchida served as exhibition director, is currently on view through June 25.
