中間発表が終わった瞬間にハッピバースデーの歌とともにケーキが運ばれ同級生が自分の誕生日を祝ってくれた。どうやら休憩中に友達が自分の顔に見立てた即席ケーキを作ってくれていたらしい。無意識に耳の部分から食べたら、誰かがゴッホになったねと言った。そんなオランダはアイントホーフェンから今回もお届けします。

少し前になるが10月21日から29日までダッチデザインウィークが開催されていた。世界中のデザイナーや企業の展示はもちろんDesign Academy Eindhoven(DAE)の卒業制作展Graduation Showも目玉の一つになっており、自分の作品を世界にアピールする重要な機会になっている。イベントの規模感はアイントホーフェンの中心部(直径4km程度)をベースに8箇所くらいのまとまった展示エリアが点在している。それぞれの距離感は徒歩だとちょっと大変だけれども自転車でちょうど良いくらいである。自分は雨が激しくない日に自転車で回り、4,5日間かけて知り合いから良いと聞いた展示を見ながらなんとなく全体を網羅した感じだった。

自分は日本以外のデザインウィークを見るのが初めてだったため新鮮でとても楽しめた。それと同時にデザインとアートの境界がわからなくなるような感覚があった。特にGraduation Showでは自分の中でこれはデザインなのかと疑問に感じるものも多かった。 DAEの大学院では作品を通じて学生自身の個人的な視点から社会の問題を語ることが重要視されている。例えば展示会で目立っていたものに、学生がイビサ島で出会ったレージャー用船舶であるスーパーヨットを富の象徴として捉えて、船舶の断片を1:1スケールで表現したインスタレーションとそのプロモーション作品のように製作された動画によって構成された作品があった。ただしこの作品の本質は、人々が持続可能性や平等性よりも富を見せびらかすことを優先し贅沢な幻想を抱かせることに貢献している大衆文化、メディア、映画、そしてヨット産業を批判するものであった。インスタレーションや動画にはそれらを感じさせる仕掛けがあり、作品の迫力とともにそれらの皮肉と批評性も強く静かに感じることができるものだった。

個人的な考えであるがデザインとは何か設定した目的を達成するための機能をもった物や非物質的なサービスなどに落とし込むこと、またはその過程であると思っている。そしてその恩恵を誰もが享受できる可能性があることが重要だと考える。今回のGraduation Showで見た作品の中の多くは過程としてのデザインが多くみられた気がする。もしくは成果物は目的を伝える形にはなっているが機能がみられないため来場者は鑑賞者という役割に留まってしまいデザインされたアートになっていたように思えた。 何にせよこの大学院で重要視しているのは、プロジェクトとしての個性とそれをどのように伝えるかということでデザインなのかアートなのか考えすぎるのも野暮な気がしてきた。そんなことを考えている時に展示会場の一つであるアイントホーフェン中央駅の壁にオランダ出身の画家モンドリアンの言葉がネオンライトで飾られているのに気がついた。日本語に訳すと「習慣という一種の記憶は、人生や芸術を楽しむ上で最大の障害となる」という言葉だった。そっすよね先輩！一旦自分の常識は置いておいて新しいことを受け入れて挑戦していこうと思った。

At the moment the midterm presentation was over, a cake was brought out with the Happy Birthday song and my classmates celebrated my birthday. Apparently, during the break, a friend had made an impromptu cake that looked like my face. When I unconsciously ate it from the ears, someone told me I looked like Van Gogh. From such a Eindhoven, the Netherlands, I bring you another entry of the journal.

A while ago, Dutch Design Week was held from October 21 to 29. The Graduation Show, an exhibition of graduation projects by Design Academy Eindhoven (DAE) as well as exhibits by designers and companies from around the world, is one of the main attractions of the exhibition and is an important opportunity to showcase one's work to the world.The scale of the event is about 8 exhibition areas scattered around the center of Eindhoven (about 4 km in diameter). The distance between each area is a bit difficult on foot, but just right by bicycle. I cycled around on a day when it was not raining heavily, and over the course of 4 or 5 days, I visited the exhibits I heard about from friends that were good, and I think I covered the whole area at the end.

It was the first time for me to see a design week outside of Japan, so it was fresh and very enjoyable. At the same time, I felt as if I had lost track of the boundary between design and art. Especially at the Graduation Show, there were many works that made me question whether they were design or not. For the Masters in DAE, it is important for students to talk about social issues from their own personal perspectives through their works. For example, one of the works that stood out at the exhibition was a 1:1 scale installation of fragments of a superyacht, a rager vessel the student encountered in Ibiza, as a symbol of wealth, and a video made as if it were a promotional piece for the superyacht. In essence, however, the work was a critique of popular culture, media, film, and the yachting industry, which contribute to the illusion of luxury and the flaunting of wealth over sustainability and equality. The installations and videos were designed to evoke these elements, and along with the power of the works, their irony and critique could be strongly and quietly felt.

In my personal opinion, design is the process of creating something with a function to achieve a set goal, or a non-material service, or the process of doing so. It is also important that everyone has the possibility to enjoy the benefits of this process. I think that many of the works I saw at this year's Graduation Show were designed as a process. Or, the artwork was designed to convey a purpose, but it did not show any function, so visitors were left in the role of viewers, and it seemed to me that it was designed art.In any case, what is important in this graduate school is the individuality of the project and how it is communicated, and I felt that it was unprofessional to think too much about whether it was design or art. While I was thinking about this, I noticed a quote by Mondrian, a Dutch painter, on the wall of Eindhoven Central Station, one of the exhibition venues, decorated with neon lights. The words were "Convention, a sort of memory, is the biggest obstacle to enjoying life and art.” That's right! I decided to put my common sense aside for once and accept new things and challenge myself.
