Exercise, Interspecies Money, Autoethnography / 運動、異種間通貨、オートエスノグラフィー

少しずつ気温が上がってきて体を動かしたくなりはじめた。同級生6人でランニングのグループを作り10月にアイントホーフェンで行われるマラソン大会に出るのだとか出ないのだとかを目標に毎週みんなで走ろうと企画した。企画したのが3月の頭で今のところ1回しかみんなで走っていない。そんな中、本格的に3学期目が始まりますますみんなで走る姿が想像しにくくなってきている。

3学期目は忙しくなりそうだ。毎年恒例のCollaborative Projectというものがあり、大学院の他コースの人たちと3から5人のグループを組んで課題に取り組む。課題は学外の企業や組織がクライアントとなり設定する。過去には水道局、メンタルヘルスの研究所、そして食料システムの持続可能性に取り組むNPO法人などがクライアントになっていた。今年はInterspecies Money（異種間通貨）という新しい概念をもとに事業を立ち上げた組織がクライアントになった。もちろん自分は初めて聞いた概念だった。異種間通貨を自分が理解できてる範囲で簡単に説明すると、人間以外の種も通貨を保有し消費することを可能にして経済の枠組みに加えることで、人間と生態系との相互依存関係を我々に再認識させることを目的とした取り組みである。フィクションのような話だと思った。技術的にもまだ課題はあるらしいが、現在の環境危機に対して人間が責任感を持って関わるための先進的な取り組みとして注目されているらしい。この取り組みに対してデザインを通じてどのように貢献できるか、または批判的になれるかが問われている。自分は自然の中で育ったわけでもなければ、ペットも飼ったことがなく、通貨や経済にも疎いのでこのプロジェクトに対して自分の気持ちや感覚を重ねて考えることが難しいと感じたが、どうにか自分に身近な関わりしろを見つけたいと思う。

そして今学期からはThesis Proposalといって来年から始まる論文の下準備がはじまる。研究手法やテーマの決め方などを教わるなかで、オートエスノグラフィーという研究手法について学んだ。オートエスノグラフィーとは自分自身の経験や体験を振り返り、そこを出発地点としてより広い文化的、政治的、社会的な意味と関係づけていく質的研究手法である。主観的になりすぎて客観性が失われるなどの議論はあるが、個人的な視点から社会の文脈を再構築するという意味でこのContextual Designにはぴったりな手法だと思った。また何か強い特徴的なバックグラウンドがない自分にとっては、今までの些細な経験の積み重ねを自分固有なものと考えられるこの手法はとても心強く勇気をもらえるものであった。

この学校に入ってから自分の今までの経験を思い返す時間が増えたと思う。それはプロジェクトを考える上で自分固有の視点を見つけなければいけないので必要な作業だがとても疲れる。写真やカレンダーを見返してもその時に何を思ってたかまではなかなか思い出せない。でも本当に大事な考えや気づきはそれを思い出すための言葉や体験が定期的におとずれてる気がするので、ちゃんとメモを残しておこうと思う。またこのジャーナルも自分の大学院生活を振り返る上で非常に大事な機会になっている。

As the temperature gradually rose, I began to feel the urge to get moving. Five of my classmates and I formed a running group and planned to run together every week with the goal of running or not running in the marathon in Eindhoven in October. Since the plan was made at the beginning of March, we have only run together once so far. As the third semester begins in earnest, it is becoming increasingly difficult to imagine everyone running together.

The third semester is going to be a busy one. There is the annual Collaborative Project, in which we work in groups of three to five with people from other courses on an assignment. The assignment is set by a client company or organization outside of the university. Past clients have included a water authority, a mental health institute, and a non-profit organization working on food system sustainability. This year, the client was an organization that had started a business based on a new concept called Interspecies Money. Of course, I had never heard of this concept before. To explain interspecies money as simply as I understand it, it is an initiative that aims to reaffirm the interdependence between humans and ecosystems by allowing non-human species to hold and consume currency and adding it to the economic framework. I thought it sounded like a fictional story. Although there are still some technical issues to be solved, it is said to be an advanced initiative that is attracting attention as a way for humans to take responsibility for the environmental crisis we are facing today. The question is how we can contribute to this initiative through design, or whether we can be critical of it. I was not raised in nature, have never had a pet, and am not very familiar with currency or economics, so it was difficult for me to relate my feelings and senses to this project, but I would like to find a way to get involved.

From this semester, we will start a thesis proposal which is a preparation for the thesis submitting next year. While learning about research methods and how to decide on a topic, I learned about a research method called autoethnography. Autoethnography is a qualitative research method that looks back on one's own experiences and experiences and uses them as a starting point to relate them to broader cultural, political, and social meanings. Although there are arguments that it can become too subjective and lose objectivity, I thought it was a perfect method for this Contextual Design in the sense that it reconstructs the social context from a personal perspective. Also, for someone like me who does not have a strong, distinctive background, I found this method very encouraging and encouraging, as it allows me to consider the accumulation of my past trivial experiences as something unique to me.

Since entering this school, I have had more time to reflect on my past experiences. This is a necessary but very tiring process, as I have to find my own unique perspective when thinking about a project. It is hard to remember what I was thinking at the time when I look back at photos and calendars. However, I feel that words and experiences that help me remember really important thoughts and realizations come to me on a regular basis, so I will try to keep notes of them. This journal is also a very important opportunity for me to reflect on my graduate school life.
