Exodontia, Milan Design Week, Fluidity / 抜歯、ミラノデザインウィーク、流動性

4月がやってきた。つまりミラノデザインウィークがある。自分は日本の大学で建築を主に勉強してきたが、それでもヨーロッパに来たら絶対に見てみたいと昔から思っていた。そんな憧れのミラノデザインウィークだったが、１週間前に親知らずを抜歯したため左頬がパンパンな状態でミラノの街を歩かなければいけなくなってしまった。アイントホーフェン空港のセキュリティーチェックでは口の中に何か隠しているのではないかと疑われたりしたが無事にミラノに辿り着いた。

ミラノは思っていたよりも気温が低く歩き回るのには適した気温だった。街を歩いていて角を曲がると歴史的な建造物がふらっと現れるように、美しい建築が当たり前に点在していることに改めて驚かされた。そしてそれらの建築の美しい内装と合間った展示が何よりもミラノデザインウィークの見どころだと思った。 イタリア人建築家のオズヴァルド・ボルサーニがミラノ郊外に設計したヴィラ・ボルサーニで行われたデザインプラットフォームのAlcovaによる展示も建築の美しさと展示作品が相まってとても良い展示だった。その展示の中でも個人的に一番好きだった作品は、コロンビア人デザイナー、ナタリア・クリアドによるテーブルウェアたちだった。シンプルな幾何学を用いたシルバーの本体に真珠や翡翠などで把手をあしらったテーブルウェアがスマートさと華やかさの程よいバランスを保っていて綺麗だった。これらの作品がヴィラのキッチンのキャビネットからシンクの中まであちらこちらに展示されており、古典とモダニズムが合わさったような建築と雰囲気が合っていてそこに置かれる説得力を増していた。自分の口の状態から今回は食べ物はあまり楽しめなかったが、次回は出展者側として訪れて食も堪能したいと思った。

さてオランダに戻り大学院では今月の頭から個人のデザインスタジオが始まった。今回は水もしくは流動性がテーマで、建築家のラダ・フラスクが講師を務める。彼女は日本語にも精通していて毎朝自分に元気ですか！？と挨拶をしてくれるが、そのあとビンタされるんじゃないかといつもひやひやしている。今回のデザインスタジオでは自分が見つけたトピックが何かしらの社会問題に関連していなければいけない。今までの課題では個人的な経験からオリジナルの視点を見つけデザインを発展させていく形が多かったが、今回は社会問題が先行しそこに自分なりの意味づけをしていかなければならなく苦戦している。

ミラノの街や展示作品からの影響ですっかり自分は古典的デザインのムードになってしまっていたのだが、オランダに戻ると少しそのムードが収まっていた。やはりトレンドとは違いその街の歴史から生まれる雰囲気によってインテリアでもファッションでも常に似合う素材感があるのだと実感した。

April is here. In other words, there is the Milan Design Week. Although I have studied architecture mainly at university in Japan, I have always wanted to visit this event when I come to Europe. I had longed to visit the Milan Design Week, but I had to walk around the city of Milan with a flat left cheek because I had my wisdom tooth extracted one week before. At the security check at Eindhoven airport, I was suspected of having something hidden in my mouth, but I made it to Milan without incident.

The temperature in Milan was cooler than I had expected, which was good for walking around. I was again surprised to see beautiful architecture scattered around the city, as if historical buildings appeared around every corner as I walked through the city. And I thought that the exhibition combined with the beautiful interiors of these buildings was the highlight of Milan Design Week more than anything else.The exhibition by the design platform Alcova at Villa Borsani, designed by Italian architect Osvaldo Borsani in the suburbs of Milan, was also a very good exhibition, combining the beauty of the architecture with the exhibited works. Among the exhibits, my personal favorite was the tableware by Colombian designer Natalia Criado. The silver tableware with simple geometric shapes and handles made of pearls and jade were beautifully balanced between sleek and glamorous. These pieces were displayed here and there, from the cabinets in the villa's kitchen to the sinks, and the atmosphere was a combination of classical and modernist architecture, which made their placement there all the more compelling.I did not enjoy the food as much this time due to the state of my mouth, but next time I would like to visit the exhibition as an exhibitor and enjoy the food as well.

Back in the Netherlands, my graduate school started an individual design studio at the beginning of this month. The theme this time is water and fluidity, and architect Lada Hrask will be the instructor. She is fluent in Japanese and greets me every morning saying, "How are you? but I always fear that she will slap me afterwards (there is a Japanese wrestler famous for slapping his opponent after greeting him to get him fired up).In this design studio, the topic I find must be related to some social issue. In previous assignments, I have often found an original point of view based on my personal experience and developed a design, but this time, I am struggling because I have to give my own meaning to the social issue that preceded the assignment.

The city of Milan and the exhibited works had influenced me to be in a classical design mood, but when I returned to Holland, I found that mood had subsided a little. I realized that, unlike trends, the atmosphere created by the history of a city always has a certain materiality that suits both interior design and fashion.
