Flight jacket - Marc Jacobs

English Text

The MA-1 and other U.S. military flight jackets first became popular in the late 1980s when the movie "Top Gun" was released. The next was in the mid 90's, when some people yearned for vintage products with different materials and details from the current products. Since then, faithful reprints of models from that time have appeared, and more and more products have been arranged by modern designers, and this form has become a standard. Every year, some brand must release a new version with elements of the flight jacket, with their own sense of style and attention to detail.

The first nylon flight jacket adopted by the U.S. Air Force (then Army Air Forces) is said to be the "L-2", which was introduced in 1945. Eventually, the L-2A and L-2B were developed with different specifications, and the most famous MA-1 appeared in 1955 as an advanced version with enhanced thermal protection. Prior to the L-2, the outer fabric of flight jackets was natural leather or cotton. Nylon had been commercialized as a material for stockings by 1940, but flight jackets were probably the first time it was used for clothing. The fact that this material was used for military parachutes may have been the inspiration for the idea.

Around 1950, the American designers Charles and Ray Eames completed a chair with a seat made of fiberglass-reinforced plastic (FRP). This technology is said to have been developed by the U.S. military, and the Eameses teamed up with Genis Plastics, which manufactured FRP radar domes for fighter planes, to commercialize an early type of plastic shell chair. Throughout history, military products have often been the catalyst for the creation and diffusion of new technologies. It is likely that nylon clothing also gradually spread from military use to outdoor wear for winter protection and then to casual wear.

The Marc Jacobs flight jacket in the photo was lined up at Bergdorf Goodman when I visited New York about 15 years ago in the winter. The chest Oxygen horse tab, lower zipper flap, and epaulettes seem to be based on the early "L-2B" model. The lining and the color of the ribs were rearranged, but basically, it was made in accordance with the original model. The list price was over $4,000, but it was half price during the sale period, and the staff gave me another half price. The price may be right for an Italian-made reproduction of the detailed specifications of a flight jacket. Today, it is harder than ever to tolerate designs that reference the past without permission, and there is a growing tendency to look for politics in the criteria for design. Flight jackets have always been free from such discussions, but I wonder if their meaning will change in the future.
