その重い荷物を解いた瞬間、鮮やかな色彩が目に飛び込んできた。これが焼き物かと思わず疑う。それを慎重に机の上に置いてみる。淡い自然光を受けて浮かび上がる建築的なフォルムと、言葉にし難い情感を抱かせるようなテクスチャーの魅力にもう一度驚く。 ロナン&エルワン・ブルレックのデザインする「Sosei」シリーズは、陶器によって興味深いコンポジションを成す花器のシリーズだ。そうと知らずに見た人には、これが日本の、しかもタイルのブランドによって生み出されたということは想像できないだろう。しかしその中には、日本の誇る焼き物の伝統と、一つの国産ブランドの信念がしっかりと息づいている。

岐阜県南部、美しい自然の広がる多治見市。豊かな土壌を有するこの一帯は、「美濃焼」で知られるように日本屈指の陶産地である。実に1300年の年月の間に様々な技術や様式が編み出され、複雑で奥行きのある焼き物文化へと発展していった。そして時代の流れと共に大量生産が導入され、20世紀初頭に始まったのがタイルの製造である。コンクリート建築の増加と庶民の衛生意識の向上もあってその需要は高まり、多治見市のタイル生産量は全国一位にまで発展した。 TAJIMI CUSTOM TILESは、そんな多治見のタイルの持つ価値を国際的に広めたいという願いから生まれた。株式会社エクシィズと、クリエイティブ・ディレクターであるDavid Glaettli（ダビット・グラットリ）の両者は、タイルが建築空間の質を向上していくために重要な役割を果たすだろう、という共通の信念によって結びついた。以来、彼らが「ビスポークタイル」と呼ぶ全く新しいシステム（家具におけるビスポークのように、タイルのデザインを特注する）を武器に、海外の建築家やデザイナーへと需要の範囲を伸ばしている。

多治見タイルの特徴は、その圧倒的な生産力だけではない。伝統的な技術や素材と、新しい製造方法を組み合わせ、個性豊かなタイルを生み出すメーカーが現在も数多く存在する。TAJIMI CUSTOM TILESでは、これらのメーカーや職人と協働し、さまざまな原材料、製造、焼成方法を採用している。これにより、形、サイズ、釉薬、質感、色を問わず、実現できないタイルはないだろう。今回展示する「Sosei」は、気鋭のデザイナーとのコレボレーションによるコレクション第三弾。多治見のタイル特有の製造技術である押し出し成型技術と、日本の伝統的な釉薬が生かされ、伝統を踏まえながらも全く新しい焼き物の姿が提示されている。さらに、プロダクト単体の展示ではなく、空間を最大限利用したインスタレーションが展開される。まさに建築空間とタイルの関係性を刷新するような展示になるだろう。

紀元前3000年頃のエジプトでも使用されていたとされるタイルは、日本を含む世界の非常に広範な地域で古い歴史を持ち、その機能性や装飾性などにおいて人々の生活を支えてきた。そんな普遍的なプロダクトであるタイルと、日本の誇る多治見の焼き物文化、さらには気鋭のデザイナーによるディレクションが合わさった同プロジェクト。今後どのように世界の中で立ち位置を築いていくのか、想像するだけで面白い。

Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec(ロナン＆エルワン・ブルレック) / プロダクトデザイナー

フランスのデザイナー、ロナンとエルワン・ブルレックの兄弟は、ブルターニュのカンペールでそ れぞれ 1971 年と 1976 年に生まれ、1999 年より協働している。インダストリアル・デザインから 工芸作品まで、大量生産品から研究活動、そしてオブジェから公共空間まで、彼らの創造活動は様々 な表現領域をカバーしながら、少しずつ我々の生活に浸透してきた。彼らのキャリアは国際的な企 業や、ヨーロッパから日本に至るあらゆる地域で代々受け継がれてきた技術を持つ職人たちとのコ ラボレーションによっても特徴づけられる。様々な研究活動により世界の名立たる博物館との協働 も実現している。

David Glaettli(ダヴィッド・グレットリ) / クリエイティブ・ディレクター

1977年生まれ、スイス・チューリッヒ出身。アート、マスコミュニケーションと日本語を学び、イタリア・ミラノとスイス・ローザンヌのECALでインダストリアルデザインを学ぶ。2013年、京都にてGlaettli Design Direction を設立。2021年にチューリッヒへ移り Studio David Glaettli をオープン。東京との2拠点で活動。クリエイティブディレクション、キュレーションブランディング、コンサルティング、デザインマネージメントを専門に手がける。主なクライアントにカリモクニュースタンダード と SUMIDA CONTEMPO-RARY、TAJIMI CUSTOM TILES、MINO SOILなど。

1994 年、岐阜県多治見市に創業した総合タイルメーカー。「母なる大地に感謝をこめて。」をモットーに、 天然素材と職人の技にこだわり、オーダーメイドのタイル制作や、タイルを中心とした建材の輸出入を行なっている。自社内に多彩なタイプのタイルサンプルを製造できるラボを併設すると同時に、多治見一帯の複数のタイルメーカーと協働し、安定した生産環境を保持。また、リサイクルタイルの生産の仕組みを開発するなど、環境の持続可能性を高めるなどの取り組みも積極的に行なっている。

ABOUT TAJIMI CUSTOM TILES

The moment we unpacked that heavy load, the vivid colors jumped out at us. We wondered if this was pottery. Then carefully place it on the desk. Once again, We are amazed by the architectural forms that emerge in the natural light, and by the fascinating textures that evoke feelings that are hard to put into words. The "Sosei" series designed by Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec is a series of vases that form an interesting composition with ceramics. An unaware viewer would not imagine that this was created by a Japanese tile brand. However, the proud tradition of Japanese ceramics and the belief in a domestic brand are firmly embedded in these objects.

Tajimi City is located in the southern part of Gifu Prefecture, where beautiful nature spreads out. This area, with its rich soil, is known as "Mino-yaki" and is one of the leading pottery production areas in Japan. Over the course of 1,300 years, various techniques and styles have been developed into a complex and profound pottery culture. As time went by, mass production was introduced, and tile production began in the early 20th century. With the increase in concrete buildings and the general public's heightened awareness of hygiene, the demand for tiles grew, and Tajimi City became the largest tile producer in the country.TAJIMI CUSTOM TILES was born out of a desire to promote the value of such Tajimi tiles internationally. X’S Corporation. and creative director David Glaettli were brought together by their shared belief that tiles would play an important role in improving the quality of architectural spaces. Since then, armed with an entirely new system they call "Bespoke Tiles" (custom tile design, like bespoke in furniture), they have extended the scope of their demand to architects and designers abroad.

Tajimi tiles are characterized not only by their overwhelming production capacity. There are many manufacturers today who combine traditional techniques and materials with new manufacturing methods to create unique tiles, and TAJIMI CUSTOM TILES works with these manufacturers and craftsmen to employ a variety of raw materials, manufacturing and firing methods. In this way, there will be no tile, regardless of shape, size, glaze, texture, or color, that cannot be realized. The "Sosei" tile on display at this exhibition is the third in a collection created in collaboration with up-and-coming designers. The tiles in this exhibition present a completely new form of pottery based on tradition, utilizing the extrusion molding technique, a manufacturing technique unique to Tajimi tiles, and traditional Japanese glazes. Furthermore, They will unfold an installation using the space maximum without only putting objects. This will be the exhibition that will literally renovate the relationship between architecture and tiles.

Tiles, which are said to have been used as far back as 3000 B.C. in Egypt, have a long history in a very wide range of regions around the world, including Japan, and have supported people's daily lives in terms of their functionality and decorative qualities. This project combines such a universal product, with the pottery culture of Tajimi, and the direction of an up-and-coming designer. It is interesting to imagine how the project will establish its position in the world in the future.

Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec / Products designer

French designer brothers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, born in Quimper, Brittany in 1971 and 1976, respectively, have been working together since 1999. From industrial design to crafts, from mass-produced products to research activities, from objects to public spaces, their creative activities have gradually penetrated our lives, covering a variety of expressive fields. Their careers have been marked by collaborations with international companies and craftsmen whose skills have been handed down from generation to generation in every region from Europe to Japan. Various research activities have led to collaborations with some of the world's most prestigious museums.

David Glaettli / Creative director

Born in 1977, from Zurich, Switzerland. He studied art, mass communication and Japanese, and studied industrial design at ECAL in Milan, Italy and Lausanne, Switzerland. In 2013, she founded Glaettli Design Direction in Kyoto. He will move to Zurich in 2021 where he will open Studio David Glaettli. He is active in two bases, one in Tokyo. He specializes in creative direction, curated branding, consulting and design management. His main clients include Karimoku New Standard and his SUMIDA CONTEMPO-RARY, TAJIMI CUSTOM TILES, and MINO SOIL.

X’S Ltd. / Management

A comprehensive tile manufacturer founded in 1994 in Tajimi City, Gifu Prefecture. With the motto "With gratitude to Mother Earth", With a focus on natural materials and craftsmanship, they produce custom-made tiles and import and export building materials centered on tiles. At the same time as establishing a laboratory that can manufacture various types of tile samples in-house, we maintain a stable production environment by cooperating with multiple tile manufacturers in the Tajimi area. In addition, we are actively working to improve the sustainability of the environment, such as by developing a system for producing recycled tiles.
