ベルリンを拠点に、素材と空間の新しい可能性を探求するイエロー・ノーズ・スタジオ（Yellow Nose Studio）。この度リヒトでの個展「INDERGARTEN: A Second Field」を控えた彼らに、いくつかの質問に答えて頂いた。このインタビューは、同スタジオの創作の根源にある感性や価値観、そして生活と創作の境界を曖昧にするような在り方を探るものだ。形式的な職能分類を超えて、自らの手で素材と向き合う彼らの姿勢が、空間・感情・素材の交差点として浮かび上がる。

LICHT : 現在の活動を始める前のそれぞれのバックグラウンドと、それが現在にどのように繋がっているか教えてください。

YNS : 私たちは2017年にベルリンでYellow Nose Studioを設立しました。出会いは台湾で建築を学んでいた頃です。その後、ベルリンに移り、一人は舞台美術を、もう一人はプロダクトデザインを学びました。そうした背景が自然と重なり、空間への感覚とモノづくりを融合させた現在のスタジオの形が生まれました。建築的な視点はいまも私たちの創作に強く影響を与えています。

LICHT : どのような経緯でベルリンを活動の拠点に選んだのですか？

YNS : ベルリンの創造的なエネルギー、開かれた価値観、そしてゆったりとした時間の流れが、私たちにとって理想的な環境でした。日々の生活の中で立ち止まり、内省したり、インスピレーションを得たりする余白があり、それが私たちの創作の出発点となることも多いのです。

LICHT : 多くの作品を自らの手で制作しているのはなぜですか？

YNS : 手を通して素材に触れることで、その温もりを直に感じることができるからです。私たちは、粘土であれ木であれ、それぞれの作品を彫刻家のようにかたちづくっています。素材の持つ本来の質感や正直な姿を、できるだけそのまま表現したいと考えています。

LICHT : 作品の着想はどのように得ていますか？

YNS : 私たちの創作のあり方は常に変化し続けています。そしてその変化のプロセスそのものを楽しんでいます。最近では、娘のMuyiとともに成長し、彼女の視点を通して世界を見ることで新たな想像が生まれました。いまは、これまで以上に開かれた心で制作に向き合えています。

LICHT : 発想からデザイン、製作まで、各過程でお二人の役割はどのように関係しあっていますか？

YNS : 私たちの制作はとても協働的で流動的です。アイデアは一緒に出し合い、それぞれの得意分野に応じて作業を分担していますが、どの段階でも常にオープンにコミュニケーションをとっています。異なる性格や視点が、ひとつの作品に多様な表情を与えてくれるところも面白いと思っています。

LICHT :ドイツのデザインは徹底した合理主義のイメージがありますが、そのような価値観はご自身の活動にどのような影響がありますか？

YNS : 私たちの作品は感情に根ざした体験から生まれますが、そのプロセスは常に構造的で思慮深いものです。素材との対話を明快に行うことで、理性的な土台の上に、やわらかく感情的なディテールが自然と立ち上がってくる、そんなバランスを大切にしています。

LICHT : 作家性の強い作品が多い印象ですが、ご自身をアーティストとして捉えていますか？それともデザイナーとして捉えていますか？

YNS : いまのところ、私たちは自分たちをアーティストに近い存在だと感じています。どの作品にも、その瞬間に私たちがとどめておきたい感情や変化が込められています。そしてそのすべてのオブジェクトに、そうした心持ちで向き合っています。

LICHT : 今の時代においてデザインはどのような意味を持っていると思いますか？

YNS : デザインとは、人々に「ものとの関わり方はひとつではない」ということを気づかせてくれるものだと思います。日常の中での新たな視点や体験をひらくきっかけになる存在です。

LICHT : 今回のリヒトギャラリーでの企画展に際して一言お願いします。

YNS : 今回の展示は「INDERGARTEN」の延長線上にあります。既存の作品に加えて、私たちがずっと組み合わせてみたいと考えていた素材である“木”と“陶”を用いた新たな可能性にも挑戦しています。根底にあるのは、やはり“遊び”の精神です。今回は、より多くの人がこの遊び心に触れられるよう、いくつかの作品は普段よりも大きなサイズで制作しました。

彼らの語りからは、生活に根ざした柔軟な感覚と構造的な思考が溶け合いにじみ出てくるようだ。作ることへの誠実でしなやかな眼差しは、彼らの作品にも確かに息づいている。だからこそ、私たちも既存の言葉や役割に捉われることなく、ただまっすぐに、目の前のかたちに触れてみたくなる。写真や言葉では伝えきれないその感触を、ぜひ実際の空間で感じて頂きたい。

Yellow Nose Studio
台湾出身の建築家、ホー・シンイン（Hsin-Ying Ho）とトゥン・カイミン（Kai-Ming Tung）によって2017年にベルリンに設立されたスタジオ。陶器や木材など多様な素材の間を行き来して、既成概念に囚われないハンドメイドのオブジェクトを制作。日常空間のあり方を問い直し、彼らの理想とする生活を体現する道具を提案する。

Yellow Nose Studio, based in Berlin, explores new possibilities between materials and space. Ahead of their upcoming solo exhibition “INDERGARTEN: A Second Field” at Licht, we asked them a few questions. This interview delves into the sensibilities and values at the core of their practice, as well as their way of blurring the line between life and creation. Moving beyond conventional roles or disciplines, their hands-on approach to materials brings into focus the intersection of space, emotion, and matter.

LICHT : Could you tell us about each of your backgrounds before starting your current activities, and how those experiences connect to what you do now？

YNS : We founded Yellow Nose Studio in 2017 in Berlin after meeting while studying architecture in Taiwan. Later we moved to Berlin where one of us studied stage design and the other product design. Our backgrounds naturally came together to form a practice that blends spatial awareness with object making. Architecture continues to be a strong influence in our work.

LICHT : What led you to choose Berlin as the base for your work？

YNS : Berlin’s creative energy, open mindset, and slower pace made it an ideal place for us. It gives us the space and time to reflect and find inspiration in everyday life which often becomes the starting point of our creations.

LICHT : Why do you choose to make many of your pieces by hand？

YNS : We feel that only by touching the materials with our hands can we truly sense their warmth. Creating with our hands allows us to shape each piece like a sculptor. Whether it’s clay or wood we always aim to present the material in its most original and honest form.

LICHT : Where do you draw inspiration for your work？

YNS : Our way of creating is constantly shifting and evolving. We enjoy being in this ongoing process of transformation. Recently we’ve been growing alongside our daughter Muyi and seeing the world through her eyes. This has given us new perspectives and allowed us to imagine things differently. We’re creating with a more open heart than ever before.

LICHT : How do you share responsibilities and collaborate with each other in the stages from concept to design to production？

YNS : Our process is collaborative and fluid. We brainstorm ideas together and divide tasks based on our strengths while keeping communication open through every stage. We enjoy how our different personalities bring multiple perspectives into a single piece.

LICHT : German design is often associated with strict rationalism. Has this value system influenced your work in any way? YNS : Our creations are rooted in emotional experiences but our process is structured and thoughtful. We like to engage in a clear dialogue with materials which brings a rational foundation to our work while allowing soft and emotional details to emerge in the outcome.

LICHT : Many of your pieces seem to carry a strong sense of authorship. Do you consider yourselves artists or designers?

YNS : Right now we see ourselves more as artists. Each piece we make carries the change and emotion we want to hold onto in that moment. We approach every object with this mindset.

LICHT : In your view what is the role of design in today’s world?

YNS : We believe design helps people discover that there are many different ways to use and experience objects. It opens up new perspectives in daily life.

LICHT : Finally could you share a few words about your upcoming exhibition at LICHT Gallery?

YNS : This exhibition is an extension of INDERGARTEN. Alongside some of the original pieces we are also exploring the possibilities of combining clay and wood two materials we’ve always wanted to bring together. At the heart of it we’re still holding onto the joy of play. For this show we also created several pieces in larger dimensions than usual so more people can experience and connect with our sense of playfulness.

Their words reveal a quiet merging of structural thinking and a flexible sensitivity deeply rooted in everyday life. This sincere and gentle gaze toward making is clearly present in their work. It invites us, too, to let go of predefined roles and language, and simply encounter the forms before us as they are. The textures and presence that cannot be fully captured in photos or words—those are best experienced in person, within the space itself.

Yellow Nose Studio
Founded in Berlin in 2017 by Taiwanese architects Hsin-Ying Ho and Kai-Ming Tung, the studio creates handmade objects that move fluidly between materials such as ceramics and wood, free from conventional boundaries. Their work reexamines the nature of everyday spaces and proposes tools that embody their vision of an ideal way of living.
